JUDITH HERB COLLEGE OF EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIPS

 

The Judith Herb College of Education 2008-2009 scholarship application will be available beginning Monday, January 7, 2008 in the Student Services Office, 3100 Gillham Hall.  A paper application may also be printed from the web at http://education.utoledo.edu/home.asp.  Application deadline is March 7, 2008.  Questions may be directed to Dr. Linda Murphy at wyldwyn@buckeye-express.com.

Note:  All need-based scholarships require that a completed Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) be on file by April 1.  Students may complete the FAFSA on the web at  http://www.fafsa.ed.gov  or students may contact the Office of Student Financial Aid at 419.530.8700.  The University of Toledo school code for completing the FAFSA is 003131.  Information provided on each scholarship is subject to change.  


General

Agnes and Clarence Alspaugh Scholarship for Student Teachers

An annual scholarship of $2000 for a student who is committed to being a teacher and who will be engaged in student teaching during the award year.  The scholarship is disbursed the semester the recipient is student teaching and is not refundable.  This scholarship will be awarded to the applicant whose FAFSA score verifies the greatest need.  The recipient shall exhibit the characteristics of being hard-working, with a love of people and a desire to help others.  The recipient shall have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.7.  This scholarship is not renewable.

 

Judith Herb College of Education Alumni Affiliate Scholarship

The Education Alumni Affiliate Scholarship is for education majors who will be attending The University of Toledo full-time or part-time for the 2008-2009 academic year. Entering freshmen, undergraduate, and graduate students are invited to apply. A cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher is preferred. Applicants are to have a 2008-2009 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) on file in the Office of Student Financial Aid by March 3, 2008. Recipients will be chosen on the basis of financial need, academic merit, and community involvement.

Thomas Baither Family Scholarship

Divided equally between the Colleges of Business Administration and Education.  Recipients shall be undergraduate students who have graduated from a Northwest Ohio or Southeast Michigan high school.  The freshman student shall have a minimum GPA of 3.0 and minimum ACT score of 20.  Upper class recipients must maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0.  Based on financial need.  Scholarship is renewable based on the minimum GPA requirement.  Renewability not specified.

 

Robert J. and Wrey Warner Barber Scholarship Fund

Recipients shall be students majoring in education. Renewability not specified.

 

Josephine Bester Memorial Scholarship (new award)

Recipients must be female students under the age of 21 years with the highest financial need. Awards presented as textbook voucher to supplement classroom textbook costs. Renewability not specified.

 

David & Helen Frye Boone Scholarship

Scholarship is for juniors and seniors in the Judith Herb College of Education who are majoring in elementary education.  May not be participants in collegiate sports at UT.  Must have a 3.0 GPA (or higher).  Not primarily based on financial need.  Renewability not specified.

 

Robert Buell Memorial Award

Award presented to a graduate student in any college who best exemplifies scholarly excellence in the physical and biological sciences, has maintained genuine academic interest in the social sciences and humanities and plans a career in education. Preference given to a future teacher of mathematics or science.

Scholarship is for students enrolled in the Judith Herb College of Education.  Based on merit and financial need.  Renewability not specified.

 

Frank and Hortense Clemons Scholarship

Scholarship is for students in the Judith Herb College of Education who are sophomores, juniors, or seniors with a 2.8 GPA or higher.  Financial aid may be considered.  Renewable as long as criteria are met.

 

Joan Coder/Toledo Woman's Club Scholarship

Scholarship is for ascending junior or senior female students in the Judith Herb College of Education with a 3.3 GPA or higher.  This scholarship is based on financial need.  The scholarship is not refundable or renewable.  However, previous recipients may reapply.  A luncheon is hosted by the Toledo Woman's Club to honor the recipient.

 

Kelly L. Darling Memorial Scholarship

Awarded to sophomores with a 2.8 GPA or higher.  Based on financial need.  Renewable.

 

Rita Corrado DeMedio Memorial Scholarship

Scholarships for students majoring in teacher education in early, middle and adolescent fields, maintaining a 2.5 GPA or higher.  Renewable.

 

George F. and Dorothy Dickson Scholarship

Scholarship is for students enrolled in the Judith Herb College of Education.  Based on merit.  Renewability not specified.

 

Education Science Research and Professional Activities Fund

Recipients must be majoring in science or have a science-related major. Must maintain a 2.7 GPA or higher and be accepted into professional education status. Renewability not specified.

 

Janell Falter Scholarship

Recipients shall be full-time sophomore, junior or senior student in the Judith Herb College of Education.  Shall have and maintain a minimum of 2.5 GPA.  Preference given to a Toledo area high school graduate or a resident of Northwest Ohio or Southeast Michigan.  Preference also given to applicants who demonstrate involvement in extracurricular activities.  Applied toward tuition and general fees.  Renewable.

 

Helen M. Fields Scholarship Fund

Scholarship for a full-time graduate student with an excellent academic record in the field of English and/or education. Based on financial need and academic achievement.

Celia Koontz Findlay Scholarship in Elementary Education

Scholarships are for U.S. citizens who are sophomores, juniors, or seniors in the Judith Herb College of Education and majoring in elementary and/or early childhood education.  Based primarily on financial need.  A minimum 2.5 GPA or higher is required.  Extra curricular and community activities may be considered particularly past or current involvement in church-related activities.  Upon review by the COE Scholarship Committee, automatically renewable if recipients continue to meet criteria.  Scholarships are automatically renewed if recipients continue to meet criteria.

 

The Florence Finkbeiner Memorial Scholarship in Early Childhood Education

This scholarship is awarded to full-time students who have been accepted to professional standing in the Early Childhood Education program while maintaining a minimum 3.3 GPA or higher.  May be applied to any and all university expenses.  Renewable if recipient continues to meet criteria.

 

Thomas and Ellen Gibney Scholarship

Scholarship is for seniors with math majors in middle school education.  Must have a minimum 2.7 GPA.  Scholarship should be applied toward student teaching.  Students receiving grants, fee waivers, or other scholarship assistance not eligible.  May be renewable.

 

Kelly Z. Gilbert Memorial Scholarship

Scholarships are for students majoring in the Judith Herb College of Education.  Renewability not specified.

 

Gottshall-Rex Memorial Scholarship

Scholarships for undergraduate female students majoring in physical education programs leading to degrees in teaching.  Financial need may be considered.  Based on scholastic achievement.  Can be renewed, based on academic accomplishment and recommendation.

 

Frances and Floyd Gunderman Award

Award for outstanding teaching professional continuing his/her education with a minimum of one year’s classroom experience.  Must have demonstrated excellence in teaching and provide two recommendations from school system.  Renewability not specified.

 

Ruth V. Hawkins – Heldt Memorial Scholarship

Scholarship awarded to a junior, senior or graduate level honor students in teacher education focusing on mathematics, music and/or physical education while maintaining a minimum GPA of 3.3.  Not based on financial need.  Renewable when recipient continues to meet qualifications.

 

Dr. Mary Jo Henning Scholarship

This award is for graduate students majoring in English in secondary education who have been recommended by the Curriculum and Instruction Department, maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0, and have financial need.  Renewability not specified.

 

David W. Henry Memorial Scholarship Award

Scholarship for sophomore, junior, or senior education majors.  Renewability not specified.

 

Patricia Parker Henry Memorial Scholarship

Full-time students majoring in teacher education, who have graduated from Waite High School, and have a 2.5 GPA or higher.  A recommendation from the advisor of Waite High school’s Future Teachers Club is required.  May be applied to any educational expense except for room and board.  Non-refundable. May be renewable if recipient maintains criteria and re-applies each year.

 

Frank Hickerson Memorial Scholarship

Irene Ambers Hill Scholarship

Scholarship for a female student enrolled in a program in the Judith Herb College of Education leading to a teaching career.  Must be a Toledo high school graduate in the top half of her class demonstrating financial need.  Recipient should be of good character with ability to relate to students.  Renewability not specified.

 

Katie Hoben Scholarship

For full-time juniors or seniors majoring in elementary education, with preference given to students interested in teaching grades K-3.  Must have minimum 3.0 GPA and be involved in campus activities, particularly fraternities, sororities, dormitory life or student government.  Renewable if recipient continues to meet criteria.  Recipients may reapply each year.

 

David G. and Rebecca Huey Education Scholarship Fund (new award)

Recipients shall be entering freshmen in the Judith Herb College of Education. Based on financial need. Preference given to students with juvenile diabetes. Renewable if student maintains a 2.75 GPA.

 

Dan and Elaine Johnson Diversity Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded to an inner-city student majoring in elementary or secondary education, particularly those planning to teach in inner-city schools.  Based on financial need.  May be renewed. 

 

Kappa Kappa Gamma Alumni Scholarship

Scholarship for physically and/or mentally challenged female students who are enrolled in the Judith Herb College of Education.

Florence Kuhlman Scholarship

Betty Ash Lapp Award Fund

Scholarship for fulltime sophomore, junior or senior at The University of Toledo that enrolled in the College of Arts and Science or the Judith Herb College of Education. Recipient must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.

 

The Frank and Hazel Larimer Charitable Trust

Scholarship awarded to entering students in the Judith Herb College of Education who are United States citizens.  Preference given to students from Northwest Ohio and then to students from Ohio.  The recipients shall be honor students who have scored 1200 or above on the SAT, or 27 or above on the ACT.  Not based on financial need.  Renewable.

 

Kitty Lowery Memorial Research Fund for Higher Education (new award, pending)

Recipients may be either masters or doctoral students who are majoring in higher education. To be used for dissertations, theses, or projects. Preference given to full-time students who submit 3-5 page proposals that (a) outline their studies and (b) provide budgets justifying awards. Advisor's signatures required. The Lunt Family Scholarship

The scholarship is awarded to an aspiring sophomore, junior, senior or graduate student in the Judith Herb College of Education who has a minimum 2.7 GPA.  This scholarship may be used for all educational expenses and may be renewable by determination of the Judith Herb College Scholarship Committee.

For a full-time junior or senior, majoring in elementary or special education.  Preference will be given to graduates from high schools in Lucas County, with some demonstrated need based on financial aid or family circumstance.  Must have a 2.8 GPA.  After the junior year, must have a 3.0 GPA or higher and show qualities of leadership and communication skills.  May be applied to any and all educational expenses.  Renewable, but current recipients must reapply each year.

John H. Russel Scholarship

Awarded to a full-time graduate student in the field of higher education.  Applicants considered on the basis of academic performance and the content of written statements (not to exceed five pages) describing their aspirations in the field of higher education.  May be paid directly to recipients to defray seminar expenses and other needs of full-time students.  Renewability not specified.

 

George and Anna Saloff Memorial Scholarship

 
Recipients shall be entering or continuing full-time students in the Judith Herb College of Education who reside with their biological parents at time of application.  Must be majors in Early Childhood Education and have a minimum 3.7 GPA.  Based on financial need.  Preference given, in the following order, to those who reside in: (1) East Toledo (2) Rossford (3) Perrysburg (4) Oregon.  Renewable if recipient continues to meet criteria.

 

Herb Sandberg Scholarship

Scholarship for a student in his/her senior year in the Judith Herb College of Education with a major in Early Childhood or Middle School Education.   A minimum 2.7 GPA is required.  Candidates must have completed courses in children’s literature and early childhood language arts and have demonstrated making reading and literature come alive.  This should be substantiated by the field experience advisors and/or cooperating teacher.

 

The Shew Music Education Scholarship

For an outstanding entering freshman student majoring in music education with at least 3.0 high school GPA, or equivalent.  Consideration will be given to student(s) demonstrating extra curricular music activities (shows, concerts).  Also available for students in upper college division in music and graduate music students with a GPA of 3.0 or higher.  Renewable.

Phyllis Haller Lamb/Ada Dawson Stephens Award of Pi Beta Phi Fraternity

STRS Scholarship Fund

Recipients may be either undergraduate or graduate students who are preparing for teacher licensure. Renewability not specified.

 

William and Dyreese Sweeney Scholarship Fund

Recipients shall be UT students who maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher, based on a 4.0 grading scale. Scholarship award is also based on student financial need.

Awards are made as follows:

  • Pharmacy students in the licensure program are awarded on odd years, and College of Education students in secondary education are awarded on even years.

     

Dr. Lance and Diana H. (Dee) Talmage Scholarship

Recipient shall be an Education major who is a junior in the Judith Herb College of Education. Must be involved in BOTH campus activities and, specifically, community activities. Recipient must have a 3.25 GPA or higher, and the award is based on financial need. Renewable for second year.

Scholarships for students who are majoring in science or mathematics in middle childhood or adolescence to young adult education.  Students must be U.S. citizens or have documented permanent residence status.  Students need to be admitted into the Judith Herb College of Education in order to receive money.  Scholarships are awarded based on merit and financial need.  A minimum 3.0 GPA or higher is required for the merit scholarships.  Upon review by the UT3 Scholarship Committee, scholarships and aid are automatically renewed if recipients continue to meet criteria.  Students who receive Financial Aid and Merit Scholarships must agree to teach in a high-need school in a high-need school district for the length of time they receive financial support or they must repay the money to the U.S. Department of Education.  For more information, visit our website:  http://www.teachut3.utoledo.edu.

The Robert N. Whiteford Memorial Scholarship

Scholarship presented to a full-time graduate student to assist in research for the thesis, project or dissertation and to further the student’s professional development. Graduate adviser must nominate student and write a recommendation in which he/she assesses your academic potential and accomplishments. Student must also supply an essay of no more than two double-spaced pages.

Celia Koontz Findlay Scholarship in Elementary Education

Iva May Russ Memorial Scholarship

Laura Bollinger Fisher Scholarship Fund

Scholarships for full-time math education majors with sophomore status.  Recipients must be U.S. citizens and have a GPA of 3.0 or higher.  The scholarshipis based on merit and will cover 25% of in-state tuition at the time of the award.  Scholarship will be renewed for five additional semesters at the original award amount if the recipients continue to meet the criteria. 

 

Ruth V. Hawkins – Heldt Memorial Scholarship

Scholarship awarded to a junior, senior or graduate level honor student in teacher education focusing on mathematics, music and/or physical education maintaining a minimum GPA of 3.3.  Not based on financial need.  Renewable if the recipient continues to meet qualifications.

Lucile Marine Scholarship

Scholarships for undergraduate and graduate students majoring in special education or early childhood education.

 

Dr. Marjorie and Milford Romanoff Scholars Fund

Recipient shall be a junior or senior level student in the College of Education, enrolled full-time or part-time, and majoring in special education.  Recipients shall have a 3.5 GPA or higher on a 4.0 scale.  Preference will be given to students who are well informed not only about special education but also about worldly issues.

 

Jay J. and Clara B. Shuer Scholarship

Award for outstanding students majoring in the field of special education.  Renewability not specified. 


Vocational Education

Career and Technical Education Scholarship (formerly, Vocational Education, Trade and Industrial Scholarship)

Scholarship for a graduate student with a degree in vocational education (holding either a 4-year provisional, 8-year professional certificate or 5 year license) who is active in the Ohio Vocational Association and the Professional Vocational Industrial Clubs of America.  The student must be enrolled full-time (12-16 hours) in a summer program and must be an active trade and industrial education teacher.  Based on financial need and academic achievement.  Can be renewed upon application.
